"Artist of the Month" for April

The Art Market “Artist of the Month” for April is famed illustrator Jon Buechel. He began his career in 1948 at the Detroit Free Press, later becoming known for "Buechel's World", a weekly illustration that ran from 1989 until 2004 in the Free Press. 

Our pieces are all original works by Jon Buechel.

Macomb County Annual Secondary Student Show, March 6 - April 13, 2021 presented by Extra Credit Union. This juried show will feature the artwork of Macomb County students grades 7 - 12. A virtual and on-site exhibition featuring 274 artworks by 191 students.

This exhibit will be available both in person in our gallery space with 97 artworks on display, and online with all 274 artworks displayed. A special thank you to the Macomb County art teachers and students, as well as our award sponsors, staff, volunteers, donors, and board members for making this event possible.

The student shows are highly anticipated each year. You will be inspired by what these young people can do!

SPRING!

Oh, how we have longed for Spring! More daylight, warmer days, new life! This week we will look at Spring images from our Art Market artists. 

Spring means returning birds, and flowers blooming! Catherine Firmbach specializes in photographing both. The cards shown are all "frame worthy", and perfect for tucking into those hard-to-fill small spaces!

Just for Fun!

Art can be fun! This week we will look at the amusing, whimsical, and "just for fun" art here at the Art Market in Anton Art Center.

Darren Dundee is adept at creating mixed media art pieces from found objects. The fanciful title he gives to each piece adds to the joke!

Detroit and Mount Clemens nostalgia

Today the DIA exhibit “Visions of American Life: Selections from the Nancy and Sean Cotton Collection of American Art” opens in our Community Gallery! This prestigious exhibit contains paintings depicting daily life in the late 19th, and early 20th centuries. 

In keeping with this theme, this week’s blog will feature nostalgic images of Detroit, and Mount Clemens.

Their subjects range from the iconic, such as majestic views of the natural world created by artists associated with the so-called Hudson River School in the mid-1800s, to the unexpected, as seen in the ticket stubs, newspapers, and peanuts meticulously rendered in realistic detail by trompe l’oeil painters at the turn of the twentieth century.
